Man arrested after fight

Susan Cunningham

— A fistfight in Oak Creek sent one man to the hospital on Saturday, police said.

Donald Schweikert, 34, of Steamboat Springs was transported to Yampa Valley Medical Center after the fight was broken up. He was in good condition in the hospital Sunday morning, a hospital official said.

Brandon David Himmerite, 22, of Oak Creek was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and taken to the Routt County Jail. A judge will set his bail today.

The fight was reported at 2:06 p.m. Saturday, and Oak Creek Police Officer Chris Tritz responded. When he arrived, people told him that one man involved in the fight had just left the scene.

Tritz chased the man, who was in a truck with three other men, and detained the group until he could figure out what had happened.

The four men drove by the Oak Creek Post Office just before the fight began and saw Schweikert outside. One man in the group had a problem with Schweikert, so his friend Himmerite and a second man got out of the truck and confronted Schweikert, police said.

Both parties were confrontational, Tritz said, and punches were thrown.

“The next thing you know, one guy’s on the ground, the other guy’s getting pulled off of him,” he said.

Tritz said Schweikert sustained serious injuries. No weapons were involved.

The fight is under investigation. Tritz said additional charges could be filed against Himmerite, and charges could be filed against Schweikert.
