Lynette Weaver: Exception to story

— A friend of mine was kind enough to save me a copy of the Steamboat Today from Wednesday, Jan. 30. The story’s headline was “No injuries reported,” referring to the icy storm of Monday, Jan. 28. There is an exception to this headline.

My husband, Norm Weaver, was a victim in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 40 just east of town early Jan. 28. The roads were very icy and this was in fact a very serious accident, with injuries. He was later airlifted to the Center of the Rockies in Loveland for the extent of his injuries, where he stayed the rest of the week. He is in for a long recovery, but it was said that he was very lucky to have survived. We are very thankful. He will mend.

This would be a very good time to thank some folks here in Steamboat. Did you all know that we have the finest Fire and Rescue team possible? I came to value our paramedics for more than their expert, urgent medical care. They had to pry my husband out of a small, crunched vehicle without causing more harm. After all the exams and X-rays, they were still around to load him into an ambulance bound for the airport. It was a full morning for them in following through with their responsibilities. They were from the mountain division, and they are Mike H., Troy, Joe and Matt N. They all made a difference in the recovery.

The staff at Yampa Valley Medical Center is not to be excluded. The ER nurse on duty, Lynn, Dr. Powers and Dr. Fabian all were very calm, compassionate and direct. We thank you all most sincerely.

Norm sampled various forms of transportation on that particular Monday, and he really wasn’t able to enjoy the variety. However, I got to drive to the Front Range over Cameron Pass in the blizzard that hit the Steamboat area later that evening. I will always remember my mode of transportation that evening.

Thanks again to all the medical professionals in this community. It’s a pleasure to live here.
