Lulu Gould: Children braver than our politicians
March 26, 2018
Having just participated in the March For Our Lives rally here in Steamboat this past Saturday, let me just say I am truly amazed and inspired by the courage and determination of these young adults to have their voices heard and demand action on solutions to reduce and prevent gun violence in our country. Ninety-six Americans are killed by gun violence every day, whether by homicide, suicide or mass slaughter.
Meanwhile, on Monday, March 19, just mere days before this national and worldwide uprising of students, Colorado Senate Republicans rejected a ban on bump stocks, regardless of a pending federal ban, which are just breadcrumbs to make us all feel as if they are doing something. They also advanced a bill to repeal the 15-round limit on ammunition magazines passed in 2013. This includes our own State Sen.Randy Baumgardner.
It is no wonder our children are finally speaking out. When 76 percent of Americans support sensible gun reform, including responsible gun owners, how does this make sense?
One glaring explanation is that these politicians are beholden to the gun lobby, accepting millions of dollars in campaign contributions and therefore continue to vote the party line, letting down the majority of their constituents across the state. Sen. Cory Gardner has taken almost $4 million from the NRA and Rep. Scott Tipton took $25,550 from gun lobbyists in the year 2016 alone.
Let me be clear. These are the facts. Death and violence does not discriminate whether you are Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green, Unaffiliated or anybody else. Common sense gun safety reform is not a partisan issue, never was and never should be. It is an issue of senseless and preventable horrific injury and deaths.
These students are not marching to the right or to the left but right down the middle. They have conducted themselves with nothing but incredible composure, maturity and informed energy and deserve to be heard. Their pure truth speaks volumes. Action needs to be taken. Right now. No more silence.

We all know the only way to make change is to vote and make smart choices on the ballot. Many of these politicians better get their resumes ready and start looking for a new job if they continue to turn a blind eye and deaf ear.
Make no mistake, these young adults have just begun and they will be voting. They are leading us, and we must follow, every single one of us. Do not underestimate their power. The very definition of the word amend, as in the Second Amendment, is to change and improve as needed. It is not static. This brave and so-not-static generation just may change the course of history.
