Steamboat places second in Mullen

A shakeup in the Steamboat Springs girls tennis team’s lineup worked.

With new doubles teams and a new singles player, the Sailors placed second at the Mullen Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Pinehurst Country Club.

Mullen won its tournament, scoring 36 points. Steamboat scored 26 points.

“It was a great tournament for us,” Sailors coach John Aragon said. “We are a much stronger team the way we played this week. It looks like we are going to keep this lineup.”

The Sailors crowned three champions at two slots. Lisa Floyd won the No. 2 singles bracket, and Molly Weiss and Kristin Toy won the No. 1 doubles title in their debut. Weiss previously was playing No. 3 singles, but Aragon and coach Don Toy moved Weiss into the doubles slot to pair with Toy, who played her first tennis of the season in Mullen.

Because Toy transferred to Steamboat from California, she had to sit out the first six dates of the season.

“Kristin and Molly beat a solid doubles team,” Aragon said.

Shelby Reed, who moved from doubles to the No. 3 singles slot, placed second. Tara King and Heidi Hillenbrand placed third at No. 4 doubles.

Steamboat’s top singles player, Breanne Murray, placed fourth.

“Hopefully, this is one little stepping stone that will take us closer toward regionals and the state tournament,” Aragon said.

After weather forced the tournament to start late Friday, the skies cleared Saturday.

“It was perfect tennis weather,” Aragon said.

Steamboat returns to the courts at 4 p.m. today for a dual match against Vail Mountain School. The matches will be held indoors at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs.
