Lindsey Lambek: Spring Creek Trail needs to be developed correctly

The problems created by downhill bicyclists that Johnny Walkers’s letter to the editor addresses occurs on the entire length of Spring Creek Trail. To say there is a problem on only one section is myopic.

I have been riding mountain bikes and walking dogs on Spring Creek for over 30 years and have experienced my own share of aggressive and inconsiderate downhill cyclists. Expanding to a downhill-only option on 90 percent of the trail (paralleling the existing trail) will alleviate this problem except for the portion that was rightfully discussed.

Additional mitigation is needed. I would suggest installing a mandatory walk-through gate between bridges #1 and #2, forcing downhill bicyclists to get off their bikes and reset their attitudes. Maybe a three-fence zigzag ride through the zone could be used as well to slow riders down again.

Change can be difficult to embrace, but it is inevitable. Spring Creek Trail can be a better trail for every one if developed correctly.
