Lightning sparks single-tree fire near Mill Creek wildfire site

Lightning sparked another wildfire Tuesday night.

The new fire was contained to a single tree and is close to where the Mill Creek Fire is burning 13 miles northeast of Hayden.

Shortly after 7 p.m., West Routt Fire Protection District firefighters were called to check smoke southeast of Pilot Knob.

It was determined the fire was in the North Routt Fire Protection District, and district firefighters responded.

Routt County Emergency Management Director David “Mo” DeMorat said the fire was in a remote location of of Routt County Road 56C, which was difficult to access.

On Tuesday night, firefighters dug a fire line around the tree and sprayed foam.

Firefighters responded again Wednesday morning.

"We cut the tree down and made sure the fire was out," North Routt Chief Mike Swinsick said.
