Kathi Cain: Policy over personality

In his recent letter to the Steamboat Today, Ken Collins says he is flabbergasted by Trump supporters. I think Mr. Collins would be surprised to know that many of us have found Donald Trump to be boorish and uncouth at times and have cringed at many of his statements. That being said, we voted for him anyway because we were concerned about the direction our country was going, and the alternative, Hillary Clinton, was unacceptable.

I was on a flight from Philadelphia to Denver last month, and the woman sitting next to me had been in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on business. She said she couldn’t believe that the Amish people in Lancaster had Trump signs everywhere, and when she asked them why they would vote for him, they said it had to do with values.

Like Mr. Collins, this woman couldn’t believe they were of this mindset. I said to her that the Amish people may have felt their religious liberties and their way of life were under threat if Clinton were elected.

Those of us who want to follow the Bible’s guidelines for the way we conduct our lives are increasingly being labeled bigots. Donald Trump spoke to our concerns and promised that our religious freedoms would be protected.

The economy, health care, lack of employment, the right to bear arms, the right to life — all of these issues — were on the line in the last election, so the candidate’s pleasing personality, or lack thereof, was not as important to us, as was the future of the United States of America.
