July 4th fireworks show a no-go in Steamboat Springs

Linda and Jim Adams, of Denver, watch the fireworks show on July 4, 2011, on Howelsen Hill. The city has decided to cancel its 2018 show because of fire danger.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The city of Steamboat Springs announced Thursday it was canceling Fourth of July fireworks due to dry conditions.

Instead, there will be a laser show at the base of Howelsen Hill the evening of July 4.

City leaders decided to cancel the fireworks for the safety of participants and volunteers, as well as the potential wildfire threat.

"This decision is never an easy one," Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Chief  Mel Stewart said in a news release. "With several wildland fires around the state and local conditions showing no improvements in the near future, this was the most prudent course of action, and I hope everyone understands."

The North Routt County community is still planning to host a fireworks show at Steamboat Lake on July 7.

Steamboat's fireworks at Howelsen Hill were also canceled in 2017 because of dry conditions.

Las Vegas Lasers has been hired to put on the laser show, which will take the place of the fireworks. The company was in Steamboat earlier this month doing tests for the upcoming show.

“It was cool,” Assistant City Manager Winnie DelliQuadri said June 12. “He didn’t bring the full set-up, because we were mostly making sure the site worked.”

A DJ will start performing at 8 p.m., and the laser show will start at 9:45 p.m. The best viewing location for the laser show will be at the base of Howelsen Hill.

The city reminds people that fireworks that leave the ground are illegal in Colorado.

The city budgets $45,000 for July Fourth fireworks and associated costs. The laser show is costing the city $18,460. The stage and sound equipment will cost about another $5,000.
