Jim and Gayle Dudley: A caring community

Having lived in Steamboat for 34 years, we knew what a special place it is, but we are overwhelmed with the support and love that has poured out for our family.

Most of Steamboat now knows the story of Matt’s diagnosis with leukemia and our temporary move to Seattle to be with him and his family (“Steamboat doctor takes leave,” Friday Steamboat Today). Social media has allowed many people to follow Matt’s journey. Through the site http://www.caringbridge.org, Matt has journaled his struggles and his victories. We have heard from friends from kindergarten, high school, medical school, Steamboat, Alaska and coast to coast. The outpouring and the support has brought many tears and much strength to both Jim and I. We have received cards, care packages, books and much more from so many people; we cannot begin to thank everyone.

Our businesses, Steamboat Medical and Sew Steamboat, have been more than generous with telling us to go and take care of the family and not worry about our responsibilities. We know that Matt faces a huge mountain to climb and an unknown ending, but our family feels the love, caring and support that only a truly special place like Steamboat can offer.

We look forward to seeing many of you on May 4 and 5 for the bone marrow drive, reception and, of course, soccer game. Thank you again for all the thoughts and prayers.
