‘Jeopardy!’ tryout: A test of my wits and possibly my sanity
July 17, 2014
At this point, would I even be able to participate due to my tardiness? I was practically in tears by the time I found the lobby again, now officially late.
My previous attempts to explain to the concierge what I was trying to find had been useless, but maybe because on the second try, I told him where I was trying to go instead of just expecting him to know where the auditions were, I finally got set in the right direction, reaching the conference room where they were hosting the tryouts just as they were about to close the doors.
I don't even want to think about what might have happened if I hadn't sprinted once I got out of the elevator.
After that ordeal, the 50-question test, the mock gameplay and the contestant interview were completely stress-free, and it seemed so much simpler than the previous two occasions.
You'll understand if I don't reveal too much about the process…
Aside from the terrible vacation that sandwiched the experience, I'm feeling pretty good about how everything went, although I suppose my odds of making it to the Culver City, California, soundstage where they do the filming are still about the same as they ever were, with a few hundred lucky eggheads being selected out of a few thousand applicants.

While I'm swimming around in the contestant pool from now until the end of 2015, I've got some time to think about a couple things, and no, not what color tie I'll wear should I make it to the show.
For one, I should probably stop putting so much stock in a game show to provide my self-worth, because I'm certain there are plenty of people smarter than I who haven't even bothered to try out for "Jeopardy!" At least, let's hope that's the case.
Secondly, I did feel incredibly fortunate to have so much support from family and friends leading up to this whole crazy thing. When you wake up to your phone saying you have 11 text messages, all of which are well-wishers saying, "good luck," it's a pretty nice start to your day.
Will I get on the show this time? Can't say, so I won't even try to ring in to answer.
Will I keep at it if this audition wasn't the one?
I might just break my buzzer and my thumb trying to be the first one to say yes.
