Steamboat hockey

6:30 p.m. Friday: Steamboat (0-6) vs. Chatfield (0-4)

3 p.m. Saturday: Steamboat vs. Lewis Palmer (3-2)

The Sailors have made their way through a brutal opening schedule this winter, and they’ll make their Howelsen Ice Arena debut this weekend in back-to-back home contests.

Steamboat has knocked on victory’s door twice this year, losing by just a goal in contests to Denver East, 3-2, and Dakota Ridge last weekend, 2-1. Friday night against Chatfield very well may be Steamboat’s prime chance to score one in the win column.

The Chargers have been outscored this season, 18-4, and are coming off an 8-0 blowout to Dakota Ridge. Saturday should be a little tougher against Lewis Palmer, a team that has won three straight this season and 18 games a season ago.

Steamboat boys basketball

3:30 p.m. Saturday: Steamboat (4-3) at Eagle Valley (0-6)

The Sailors escaped with a league-opening win Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Eagle Valley Devils can’t seem to sniff victory en route to a winless record this winter.

Steamboat eked out a win at home against Rifle, 43-39, to open Western Slope play 1-0. The Devils have lost all their games by an average margin of 32 points per contest.

The Sailors’ Robi Powers has continued his hot streak, averaging 17 points per game.

It will be Steamboat’s last game until Jan. 9.

Steamboat girls basketball

2 p.m. Saturday: Steamboat (3-4) at Eagle Valley (5-1)

The Sailors still are trying to find some continuity, especially offensively, after losing their league opener Wednesday to a stingy Rifle team, 39-27.

Eagle Valley has shown continued signs of improvement from last year’s 12-11 season. The Devils are now 5-1 on the season and walked away from last weekend’s Steamboat Shoot-Out a perfect 3-0.

Senior Taylor Martin is leading Eagle Valley in scoring, averaging 14 points per game. Sophomore Kylie Martin is second on the squad with 11 points per game.

Like the boys squad, it will be Steamboat’s final game until Jan. 9.

Soroco boys basketball

8 p.m. Friday: Soroco (3-2) at Rangely (1-2)

4 p.m. Saturday: Soroco vs. South Park (0-4)

The Rams dive into their final two games of the winter’s pre-league schedule this weekend. Soroco will begin Friday night at Rangely, which won handily against Moffat County’s junior varsity in the Panthers’ first game, 56-32 — a team the Rams edged by seven points last weekend.

That has been Rangely’s lone win with losses to Fruita Monument’s junior varsity and to Mancos. The Panthers are led by senior Colt Allred (17 points per game) and freshman Patrick Scoggins (16.7 points per game).

Soroco will play in its home gym for the first time this season Saturday against South Park, a team the Rams beat by 22 points Dec. 5.

Soroco girls basketball

6:30 p.m. Friday: Soroco (3-1) at Rangely (1-2)

1 p.m. Saturday: Soroco vs. South Park (4-2)

It’s been 10 days since the Rams played in a game, but their last showing was a 1-point overtime thriller at Denver North, a school eight times the size of Soroco.

The Rams now have a chance to jump out to 5-1 by weekend’s end. They’ll first head to Rangely — a team they beat by 27 points Dec. 5, led by Briana Peterson’s 19 points. Four Soroco players finished with double-digit scoring in that win.

In the Saturday game, the Rams’ home debut, the team will play host to South Park, which already has played six games this winter. The Burros won their first three contests by an average of 23 points but have lost two of their past three.

Steamboat, Hayden and Soroco wrestling

Saturday: Steamboat, Hayden and Soroco at West Grand Tournament

All three Routt County squads will be in Kremmling this weekend for the always-deep West Grand Tourney, which will draw 19 schools this go-around.

Hayden is coming off a victory at last weekend’s Soroco Invitational, where the host placed fifth with its three wrestlers.

Steamboat also took fifth place at a talent-packed Delta Panther Invite on Saturday.

There could be a good intra-county matchup at 106 pounds between the Sailors’ Colton Pasternak, Hayden’s Garrett Murphy and Soroco’s Shad Covalt, all wrestlers who competed in their respective finals last weekend.
