Health briefs: Volunteer info sessions planned for Alzheimer’s event

Walk to end Alzheimer’s volunteer info sessions planned

Casey's Pond Distinctive Senior Living and the Alzheimer's Association of Colorado invite residents of Northwest Colorado to participate in the community-wide Walk to End Alzheimer's in Steamboat Springs on Sept. 3 at Caseys' Pond. Learn more about how to volunteer or start a team at one of the volunteer mixers April 1 and 2.

Those who are unable to attend one of the mixers are asked to visit alz.org/walk to pre-register. Businesses and individuals are encouraged to sign up early.

The information sessions are from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 1, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at Casey’s Pond, 2855 Owl Hoot Trail. For more information, call 970-879-8855 or email info@caseyspond.org.

The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. Since 1989, the Alzheimer's Association has mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk; now the Alzheimer's Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer's.

Lyme disease has been a topic of conversation, both nationally and internationally, in the past few months. Though Lyme disease is less common in Colorado, people still suffer from the sometimes debilitating disease of chronic lyme. A new support group in Steamboat Springs has been created to allow individuals and families to rally together to find solutions for the illness. The group will meet the first Sunday of each month to offer support and love to those who are suffering. For more information, visit nwcoloradolymesupport.org.

VNA offers healthy sleep tips for children

Good sleep is essential for healthy growth and development. Research shows children who do not get enough sleep can be irritable and are more likely to be obese and perform poorly in school. The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association offers the following tips to help children sleep well:

• Establish regular naptime and bedtime routines.

• Avoid cutting back on naps to get children to sleep through the night — they will become overtired and sleep poorly.

• Turn off TV and other screens at least one hour before bedtime, and keep your child's room a screen-free zone.

• Put children to bed drowsy to help them learn to fall asleep on their own. Learning to fall asleep independently will help them put themselves back to sleep when they wake at night.

• Do not put them to bed with a bottle or sippy cup — it's bad for their sleep and their teeth.

• Help your child sleep with a cool room (lower than 75 degrees), a bedtime story and calming music.

• The National Sleep Foundation recommends toddlers ages 1 and 2 get 11 to 14 hours of sleep (including naps). Children ages 3 to 5 should get 10 to 13 hours of sleep.

VNA offers tips for snowmobile safety

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association reminds residents to enjoy snowmobiles safely and to encourage young riders to follow key safety rules.

• Always wear a helmet, eye protection and proper clothing.

• Become familiar with the snowmobile, and operate at safe speeds.

• Stay to the right side of trails on corners and hills.

• Stop before crossing roads, and always cross at a right angle to traffic.

• Stay on trails and in areas snowmobiling is permitted. Respect other people's property.

• Never ride alone; always let someone know the planned route, destination and return time.

• Become familiar with the terrain, and use extra caution at night.

• Avoid travel on frozen bodies of water.

• Listen to weather forecasts. Carry emergency supplies, and learn basic survival skills.

• Never consume alcohol or drugs before or during snowmobiling.

Youths age 10 to 16 who wish to operate a snowmobile on public lands must be certified through a snowmobile safety training course approved by Colorado Parks and Wildlife or be supervised by someone who has taken the training. Variety of support groups meeting this week

• A bereavement support group meets from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Rollingstone Respite House. The group is open to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. Call 970-871-7629 prior to attending the first meeting.

• A domestic violence support group for women meets from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays at Advocates Building Peaceful Communities. Call Diane at 970-879-2034 before attending.

• The Steamboat Meditation Recovery Group meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Buddhist Center of Steamboat Springs, 2250 Copper Frontage Road, No. 202. The group also has a recovery-based yoga at 4:30 p.m. The group will explore recovery through meditation, book study and open discussion. Meetings are open to all faiths and addictions.
