— The phone rings every day until the callers finally get what they want, Tom Taylor explained.

This week, the head Haymaker Golf Course pro was finally able to give them the answer they wanted: The course opens for the season bright and early Friday.

“It’s always exciting, exciting to get people out there,” Taylor said.

He said last weekend’s persistent rains proved troublesome as crews prepared the course. At one point, he didn’t anticipate having the full 18 holes ready to open together.

Things dried up just enough, however, and the team was able to get two mows on the course, a luxury not always afforded in a Routt County spring.

“We’ve got everything up and going,” he said. “The grounds crews have done a great job getting it ready. We mowed it twice, again today, so that’s pretty good for this time of the year.”

He said the morning tee times are booked strong, due in part to another Rocky Mountain spring quirk. Frost delays must be built into the schedule. He’s expecting about 70 to 80 golfers to fill the morning, but said the schedule is wide open after 10:30 a.m., and that early season rates await those locals ready to get out on the course.
