Hayden wildland fire fully contained

Melinda Dudley

— Hotspots left over from a wildland fire north of Hayden on Monday were extinguished Tuesday morning, bringing full containment to a fire that began as a controlled burn on Sunday.

The controlled burn was ignited by property owners on Routt County Road 76, West Fire Protection District Chief Bryan Rickman said Tuesday.

“They were cleaning up the property, trying to get it ready for sale,” Rickman said. “But the wind came up in the afternoon and it got away from them.”

West Routt fire crews were called to the scene for about two hours Sunday afternoon to help the property owners get the burn under control. But the fire rekindled at about 1 p.m. Monday because of windy conditions, Rickman said.

The fire burned approximately 15 acres of oak brush and sagebrush near four homes, Routt County Emergency Management Director Chuck Vale said Monday.

“It did get relatively close to those houses,” Rickman said. “I wouldn’t say those structures were threatened, but we were getting very close to that.”

A few hotspots that remained Tuesday morning were extinguished, although they were not of significant concern because they sprang up within the fire line established Monday night, Rickman said.

“We ended up getting a bulldozer from the county and put a fire line around it to put it out,” Rickman said. “Everything looks good for now.”
