Hayden Tigers boys basketball falls big to No. 8-ranked Meeker

— Another tournament contest, another another tough loss against a state powerhouse for Hayden High School boys basketball as the Tigers fell handily to Meeker in the Meeker Shootout on Thursday night, 67-21.

Never mind the final score, though, Hayden coach Jody Harvey said. After seeing his already-thin squad battle a team-wide flu bug this week, Harvey was very pleased with how his players fought against the Class 2A No. 8-ranked team.

"I challenged the guys to be fearless and go and attack," Harvey said. "They did not back down. Not enough shots fell, but they played hard and attacked. I was very proud and pleased with them."

Senior Carlos Valdez again led the way in scoring, pitching in eight points for Hayden. Thomas Rauch and Kole Miner each had five points.

The good news for the Tigers is the loss sets up a 4:30 p.m. showdown with rival Soroco in the Meeker Shootout’s second round Friday night. The Rams also lost big in their tourney opener.

"Hopefully, we’ll go and compete and give them all we have," Harvey said.
