Hayden licensed staff contracts get OK
All but 2 licensed positions renewed; Gina Zabel to return to district

Hayden — The Hayden School District will bring back all but two licensed staff positions for the 2010-11 school year.
The School Board on Wednesday night voted to not renew the contract of a Hayden High School science teacher, a probationary teacher who has yet to spend three years with the district. Board members last month eliminated Hayden Middle School Principal Gina Zabel's position after it voted to combine the middle and high schools into a secondary school for grades six through 12.
Zabel, however, was among a list of 24 nonprobationary licensed staff members the School Board voted, 4-0, to approve for contracts next school year. The board also unanimously approved contracts for 13 probationary licensed staff members for next year.
School Board member Tim Frentress didn't attend the meeting.
The district also will reduce a position at the high school by creating a math and science teaching position. The position will replace the science teacher and retiring math teacher John Wither.
After the meeting, Administrative Consultant Mike Luppes said Zabel would become a literacy teacher in the district. This year, that position was filled by a long-term substitute who won't return next year.

Luppes said the district typically hires nonlicensed staff, such as secretaries, bus drivers and custodians, at the August School Board meeting. But he said the staff members would be notified sooner should the district decide to not bring some people back next year.
After the meeting, School Board President Brian Hoza said board members accomplished their goal of confirming staffing for next year.
"I think we've put to rest some of the concerns our (licensed) staff had with their situations," he said. "There's still some work to do, but I feel good. It's starting to come together."
Luppes presented a proposed 2010-11 school year budget. It included cuts and increased revenue totaling more than $417,000 to help meet a projected shortfall next year of nearly $495,000. The deficit is a result of less funding from the state, increased costs for employee health insurance and retirement benefits, and fewer projected students.
Through more cuts and other revenue sources, Luppes said he was confident the district could reach $495,000.
In other action, the board members unanimously approved the 2010-11 school year calendar. A calendar was proposed last month, but action was tabled to allow staff members a chance to review it.
A few differences from the proposed calendar include moving an off-day to Oct. 1 because the district has tentatively scheduled homecoming Sept. 24, moving the Oct. 8 and Jan. 28 furlough days to Nov. 22 and 23 and moving spring break back one week to April 28 to May 1 to accommodate the new Colorado State Assessment Program schedule.
The school year is set to begin Sept. 7 and end May 26. The only major difference from this year is the addition of three furlough days for staff members.
