Hayden girls bounce back in big win against Dubois

Ben Ingersoll

— Some woes followed the Hayden High School girls basketball team from last weekend’s tournament to this weekend at the Carbon County Classic in Wyoming, but the Tigers were able to suddenly right the ship this afternoon in a big win against Dubois.

Hayden opened the tournament with a Friday evening loss to Cokeville by a big margin. And when the Tigers again played sloppy Saturday morning against Encampment, a 50-23 loss, the coach was wondering if the blues would be going away anytime soon.

Then things clicked somewhat out of nowhere Saturday afternoon against Dubois.

Hayden shot the ball well, played strong defense and left the Carbon County Classic winners in a 45-28 win against Dubois in the tournament cap.

“We turned around and played this afternoon, and we were looking at them like we looked at Cokeville, a big, strong team, and we ended up coming out and playing so well,” Wilkie said. “We scored, we shot 3s and we played as a team.”

Grace Wilkie led the team in the morning game against Encampment with 13 points. In the afternoon against Dubois, Darian Murphy had a game-high 15 points, Wilkie and Taylor Hagar had 10, and Laura Johnson pitched in nine.

“They just played together this afternoon,” Michelle Wilkie said. “When we lose, we beat ourselves.”

Hayden will be back on the court Jan. 9 against rival Soroco.

“I’m proud of how the kids played this afternoon,” Wilkie said. “We’re going into 2015 on a positive note.”
