Hayden girls basketball team drops opener to Rangely, 34-15

— The Hayden High School girls basketball team dropped its opener Thursday, falling to Rangely, 34-15.

Hayden’s young team struggled with Rangely’s post players and couldn’t overcome a slow start.

“We’re young, and we have a lot of work ahead of us,” Tigers coach Michelle Wilkie said.

Olivia Zehner led the Tigers with six points.

Wilkie said with such a young team, the idea is to build on each game. The team plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Meeker Shootout against either Meeker or Nucla.

“It’s to get better each game,” she said about the team’s goal. “If you score four points tonight, we have to have six tomorrow. If you scored 10 tonight, we need 12 tomorrow. Everything is a goal-setting situation. We have to get better all the time.”
