Hayden boys basketball just short against West Grand
January 28, 2018
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — They keep getting closer, Hayden High School boys basketball coach Mike Luppes said, but a league victory still eluded his Tigers on Friday and Saturday.
First was a loss Friday to one of the Western Slope League's top teams, Hotchkiss, 65-44.
Saturday, Hayden carried a lead into the fourth quarter against West Grand only to fall, 51-47.
"We're coming along," Luppes said. "We're improving every game. We're taking steps. We just can't quite get over the hump."
That game against West Grand was an opportunity the team has struggled to earn in recent seasons.
Hayden led by four heading into the fourth quarter. It had withstood the Mustangs' full-court pressure well enough in the first half, but West Grand came back in the fourth with a more intense man-to-man pressure and that paid off.

Daylon Frentress and Alan Aguirre each scored eight against Hotchkiss.
Against West Grand, the Tigers got 12 from Aguirre, nine from Ethan Kern and eight from Garrett St. Clair.
"We're starting to get some scoring out of people, and that's a positive for us," Luppes said. "Now we need to get scoring that's more than the other team."
Hayden, 1-12, will hit the road Friday to play at Vail Mountain, then is at home Saturday against Soroco.
