— Streaky play was the rule in Saturday evening’s showdown between the top two boys basketball teams in the Western Slope League.

Glenwood Springs’ streaks proved better, however, and the Demons built plenty enough of a cushion to withstand a late Sailors surge, winning 57-52 and locking up the league championship.

“We did a good job,” Glenwood coach Greg Hire said. “We started out well and came out strong and played a pretty complete game.”

Glenwood Springs was best early and then again for a dominating stretch through the middle of the game. The Demons leapt to a 9-0 lead and threw the hammer down again after Steamboat charged back to tie the game at 19.

Ahead by 4 at the half, 25-21, Glenwood built the game-deciding advantage with a vicious defensive performance in the first 12 minutes of the second half.

Steamboat scored just 6 points in the third quarter and lagged far behind into the fourth.

Glenwood shuttered the lane, stopping Steamboat’s ability to drive, then forced turnovers with an intense defensive pressure.

“Overall, our team doesn’t have offensive flow,” Steamboat senior Jack Spady said. “Whatever we’re doing, it’s not working out. We’re not getting everyone involved. It just seems like Charles (Wood) brings the ball up the court and no one is doing anything.”

Despite falling far behind, Steamboat wasn’t without one last hope. Spady scored to pull the team to within 10 and then Isiah Forsyth canned a 3-point shot to make it 7.

Forsyth then hit two more treys in the final minute and Wood added another. The final one came with just 1.2 seconds remaining, however, and the 5-point gap that remained would grow no smaller.

“Our kids didn’t quit,” Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said. “Glenwood, they have a lot of shooters, and the problem is if they get open at all, they’ll knock down shots. Any of their guards can hit shots. It’s tough. You have to play them really solid defensively, then when they’re on defense they move so well. They’re quick and create turnovers.”

Wood led all scorers in the game with 22 points. Forsyth had 13 and Spady 10. Glenwood was led by Kevin Flohr, who finished with 21 points. Russell Collins had 17.

Steamboat, 12-8 and 9-3, returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Moffat County High School.

With a win, the team could lock up second place in the league.

King leads Steamboat girls to 55-38 victory

The Glenwood Springs girls basketball team opened Saturday afternoon’s Western Slope League contest wary of Steamboat senior Colleen King, doubling the Sailors forward, at times whether she had the ball or not.

And that paid off, early, as the Demons jumped to a first-quarter lead.

Steamboat’s outside shooting eventually took advantage, however, and King found a way to break through Glenwood’s restraints. The Sailors surged in the second half to knock off the Demons, 55-38.

“We weren’t playing intense and we weren’t executing, but there was a stretch in the second quarter where we really started it going,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “Finally, we got everything working and clicking in the second half.”

King finished with 22 points, including 8 she poured in during the fourth quarter. It was the hot hands of juniors Hannah Moore and Tara Spitellie that really helped free up King, however.

Spitellie canned four 3-point shots and finished the game with 16 points. Moore had two treys and 10 total points.

“They were really clamping down on Colleen, but in the second half we hit some shots, got some boards and then their defense broke down,” Ameen said. “Instead of two down low, there would just be one, and one-on-one against Colleen, I’ll take that any day.”

The win helps Steamboat separate in the top ranks of the Western Slope, securing the team in second place, behind Rifle.

Another victory Tuesday, when the team travels to Moffat County for a 6 p.m. game, would ensure the Sailors of finishing in that spot.
