Freshmen, sophomores help Sailors start 2-0

The Steamboat Springs High School girls lacrosse team got off to a 2-0 start to its season Saturday, traveling to New Mexico to win a pair of games.

The Sailors beat Santa Fe Prep 12-5 Friday, then came back a day later, still in New Mexico, to beat a team from a little closer to home, Pueblo West, 14-11.

A young Steamboat team delivered as underclassmen racked up goals. Sophomore Lucy Shimek scored five goals and had four assists in Friday’s win. Riley Schott had five goals and five assists in that game. Cassett Yeager, a senior, and Shelbee Weiss, a freshman, each had one goal.

Freshman Ava Theil had four saves in goal.

"Eleven of the 16 players were freshmen playing their first varsity game,” coach Betsy Frick said. "The most exciting part for me was seeing how much they have improved just from one week since our scrimmages in Grand Junction."

Against Pueblo West, Shimek had eight goals, Schott five and Kelly Strotbeck one.

Schott added four assists, Shimek two and Cat Read one.

"We didn’t quite do as good of a job getting open and passing to the open players, so not as many shots were assisted," Frick said. "Our defense was challenged more. I was really impressed with how fast the less experienced players are learning to work together and help each other out."
