— Despite limited training for his team, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freestyle coach Erik Skinner came away from the first weekend of competition pleased with the early results.

Taking part in a Rocky Mountain Division event in Winter Park on Dec. 8 and 9, the Winter Sports Club came away with seven top 10 finishes.

“Overall our kids did extremely well, especially for the limited training we’ve had,” Skinner said, noting the team has been able to train on a 50-meter course at Howelsen Hill, with one jump, as well as spending two days at Copper Mountain.

Robert Burden came away with the most impressive finishes in Winter Park, placing fourth on the first day and second on the second day.

The Steamboat freestyle team is now preparing for U.S. Ski Team Freestyle Selection events, Dec. 17 to 20 in Winter Park.

Starting today, the team will begin training in Winter Park in anticipation of the Dec. 17 and 19 single moguls event and the Dec. 20 dual moguls event.

The top two male and female finishers at the Selection event get on the U.S. Ski Team’s Freestyle C squad, as well as qualify for NorAm events.

“This sets the tone for the rest of the year,” Skinner said. “All the competition is the top kids in the nation and the U.S. team. It’s a doozy and a great event. There’s absolutely phenomenal skiing.”

Skinner said after going into the past two years almost overconfident, he’s taking a different approach this year.

“It’s throwing new tricks in a competition and standing up our runs,” Skinner said. “If we do that, those kids will do extremely well.”
