First Friday Artwalk listings for April 1, 2016

Chief Theater, 813 Lincoln Ave., 970-871-4791

The Chief Theater will feature Al and Vic Reiner’s “Long Days Ride: Romance of the Steam Engine,” a mixed-media show. This photo and oil exhibition is a nostalgic odyssey of steam, smoke and rails. Vic’s award-winning oils were inspired by Al’s photographs. Taste the train cake and enjoy complimentary wine. Show runs through April.

Having fun, hanging-gallery-style. This month, the artists’ work will be scattered throughout the gallery instead of being displayed in individual spaces. Artwork will include a variety of materials from bronze, wood, mineral, glass and metal, oil, acrylic, paintings, fused glass, fiber art, ceramics, photography and jewelry.

Karen Lindeman, featured artist at Creekside this month, studies fine art with the Glassell School at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Her work will be featured in the new cancer wing at the Yampa Valley Medical Center upon completion of the building.

This exhibition features a collection of artwork showcasing students in grades K-12 throughout Routt County. The annual Routt County Youth Art Show is a spectacle of visual art in a variety of mediums, presented by the Steamboat Springs Art Council. The exhibition will open with a family friendly reception.

Featured artist, Julia Dordoni will showcase original plein-air paintings she created in Steamboat Springs, Boulder and Winter Park. She will also have a selection of framed prints on display. Dordoni enjoys using vibrant colors in a slightly animated, impressionistic style.

Legendary nature photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen has traveled the natural world for more than 40 years, observing and photographing Earth’s last great wild places. His work features new releases and his newest book, “The Grizzlies of Pilgrim Creek.”

Steamboat’s newest fine art gallery focuses on creating a link between modern and timeless. A new, three-artist exhibition will open for this month’s First Friday Artwalk. The imaginative works of longtime painters Jan Maret Willman and Tadashi Hayakawa will be complemented by the contemporary artistry of renowned sculptor, David Marshall.

The “Captured Creatives” exhibit features art that revolves around artist Zach Shortway’s greatest passions: photography and Steamboat Springs. Shortway uses a variety of digital photography techniques to capture creative exposures, and he has made the town, the river, the mountains, the forests, the animals and the people the subjects of his art.

Museum Store featured artists will be Deb Babcock and Sue Gallion. Babcock specializes in one-of-a-kind pottery pieces, while Gallion’s artwork includes oils, watercolor and fiber art. Also at SAM, is the featured exhibit, “Len Chmiel: A Retrospective,” which will remain open through April 9. Chimel is one of today’s most successful landscape painters.

Strawberry Park Elementary, Soda Creek Elementary and Steamboat Springs Middle School are spotlighting students’ artwork from each school. Stop by Smokehouse and Ciao Gelato to view the work. Artwork will be on display throughout April and May.

The nonprofit gallery showcases a signature mix of diverse and varied regional art in all mediums and price ranges. Mediums include oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, encaustic, mixed media and kiln-formed glass. The gallery will also feature Sarah Juschka with her colorful, bold acrylics and Debbie Mathew with her spiritual and yoga-inspired art.

Urbane will present the works of longtime Steamboat local Dacques McCann. His installment features acrylic paints that reveal funky paintings using bright and bold colors.

Wild Horse Gallery will feature work by its wildlife artists, Jim Gilmore, Ned Aldrich, Barry Eisenach, Ezra Tucker, Richard Galusha, Lee Stroncek, Curtis Zabel, Robert Deurloo and Eugene Morelli.
