Firefighters put out barn fire near Phippsburg

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A large barn in South Routt County was heavily damaged after it caught fire Friday night.

"At this time we're not exactly sure of the cause of the fire," Yampa Fire Protection District Chief Machia Cox said.

The fire was reported at about 7 p.m. at 24990 Routt County Road 19 southwest of Phippsburg. The road is off of Routt County Road 15, which leads to Dunckley Pass.

When firefighters arrived, they found the barn was fully engulfed in flames.

"It was a very large structure, and we saved half of it," Cox said.

He said there were no animals in the barn, and there was no residential space. The barn housed animal stalls, a workshop and equipment.
