Female brewers collaborate to create Pink Boots, a new craft beer

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS – Shattering the "girly-beer" stereotype, a new craft brew, the Pink Boots Belgian Pale, is being released this week.

The beer was created by women involved in the craft beer community from Yampa Valley Brewing Company, The BARley Colorado Craft and Draft, Mountain Tap Brewery and Steamboat Brauhaus. The recipe was made in celebration of Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day, an event that was started five years ago by the Pink Boots Society, a national association for women in the beer industry.

Taking place on the same day as International Women's Day earlier in March, breweries and groups around the country and the globe invited women to hang out, chat, drink and most importantly – brew.

"Working in Michigan in 2012, I'd already spent a year in the industry and had only ever met one other woman who worked directly in beer production," said Erica Tieppo, who left Ska Brewing about eight months ago to run Yampa Valley Brewing Co.

The Pink Boots Belgian Pale will be on tap for the first time at a beer release party at 6 p.m. Thursday at The BARley Colorado Craft and Draft. A second release party is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday at Yampa Valley Brewing Co. in Hayden. The Hayden brewery will also be distributing kegs to Steamboat Brauhaus and Mountain Tap within the next week.

Tieppo teamed up with Jenny Schmidt from Steamboat Brauhaus, Christy Abbey from Mountain Tap, Kristen Lillie from The BARley and Kimi Cook, a friend and fellow brewer from Two Beers brewery in Seattle, to create the local recipe derived from the official Pink Boots Society blend selected during the 2017 Great American Beer Festival in Denver.

"I reached out to women that I knew from various accounts that carried our beer, and women that I knew from other local breweries to invite them to collaborate," said Tippeo, who met Cook while brewing at Mystery Brewing in North Carolina, which is where they teamed up to create their first Pink Boots brew in 2014.

This year’s signature blend is a mixture of Mosiac, Citra, Loral, Palisade and Simcoe – released through YCH Hops, a major U.S. hop supplier.

"Mosiac and Citra lend the tropical, citrusy, juicy flavor profile that’s sought after in many of the newer and updated beer styles that have become available," Tippeo said.

The Simcoe, Palisade and Loral, however, round out and balance the flavor profile by adding more herbal, traditional hop aromas and flavors to the blend.

"The idea was to create a beer whose fruity flavor profile character was derived from the interplay of hops, yeast and fruit to give more dimension than fruiting alone," Tippeo said.

To make the local Pink Boots Belgian Pale special, Tippeo said Azacca, named after a Haitian fruit and agricultural spirit, and 84 pounds of guava were added to the hops blend to accentuate the tropical, juicy, mango-like fruit flavors of the Mosiac in the Pink Boots Society blend.

"I love being able to take part in creating this new brew," Lillie said. "Pink Boots Society opens doors for women who have interest in the industry but who may not have seen a way in."

Proceeds from the sale of the Pink Boots Society’s collaborative brew are donated to the organizations's scholarship program, which aims to advance the careers  of women through educational seminars, classes, certifications and tours.

The closest Pink Boots Society chapters are in Fort Collins, Boulder and Denver. However, Tieppo said she is working with another brewer on the possibility of starting a Western Slope chapter to allow women living in more rural areas of Colorado to meet for events.

"Also, drink the beer," Tieppo said. "Every batch made as a part of this collaboration donates a portion of the sales to the organization on top of the revenue generated by the sales of the hop blend."
