Evidence in assault sent to CBI
Forensic analysis could be key to sexual assault, police say

Steamboat Springs — The forensics evidence in the sexual assault that was reported Oct. 21 in downtown Steamboat Springs might be the deciding factor in solving the case, police said Thursday.
Detectives with the Steamboat Springs Police Department forwarded forensic evidence to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for analysis and continue to investigate the case.
Detective Dave Kleiber, lead investigator on the case, said the physical evidence is the best chance police have to find the alleged assailant.
“We have no suspect information to go on, so if we are able to make a case, it would be built through DNA and forensic evidence,” he said. Police did a forensic examination of the victim and an examination of the crime scene, he said.
Kleiber said a woman reported that one man assaulted her at 11th and Oak streets at about 1 a.m. Oct. 21. She was unable to provide a description of her attacker, and there were no witnesses. The woman also suffered minor scrapes in the incident, Kleiber said.
Three sexual assaults were reported in Steamboat in the previous weeks, but Kleiber said the cases weren’t connected.

The CBI’s analysis of evidence probably will take about 90 days, he said.
Capt. Bob DelValle said people in Steamboat should always be aware of their surroundings and take care when they are out at night.
“With, before or after events like this, people should always be cognizant or have a level of awareness if they walk out of a bar or a residence or a place of work in the late hours,” he said.
DelValle likened personal protection to defensive driving.
“If somebody crosses the highway and hits you : it’s not your fault that it happened, but you do everything you can to make sure it doesn’t happen,” he said.
