Increase in funded students could help district's bottom line

Steamboat Springs — The number of students enrolled in the Steamboat Springs School District may prove to be the difference between a balanced budget and a district in debt.
If the district determines it has more than the budgeted enrollment of 2,077 funded students, the resulting increase in state funding could help pull the district back into the black.
The final enrollment figures for the district remain unclear, however, after a Monday night report from district Finance Director Dale Mellor and JoAnne Hilton-Gabeler, district director of curriculum, instruction and assessment.
Numbers generated by a district-wide computer program, Infinite Campus, do not match head count numbers reported by the individual schools.
According to the count provided by the schools, there are 2,077 funded students enrolled. The computer program shows 2,115 funded students enrolled in Steamboat schools.
The district had 2,045.5 funded students last year.

The overall head count is different from the funded count because several subsets of students are funded at differing levels.
Those include kindergarten students, who are funded at 58 percent; preschoolers, who are funded at 50 percent; and several groups of part-time and home-schooled students who are not fully funded.
Mellor said he expects the final count, which will be reported to the state by Nov. 10 to determine per-pupil funding provided by the state, to be somewhere between 2,077 and 2,115.
Superintendent Shalee Cunningham said the district will rely on numbers directly from the schools to reach the final count.
“We’ll be conservative, and we’ll go to the manual head count. That’s what we’re doing right now, is going out to the school sites and finding out who is enrolled in each class,” she said.
Hilton-Gabeler said Infinite Campus previously has been used to determine the official enrollment.
She guessed that individual schools haven’t added or removed students in a timely manner, possible leading to the discrepancy between the two enrollment counts.
