Emerald Mountain School hosts talk about prescription drugs

Northwest Colorado Community Health Partnership and Emerald Mountain School will host "Healthy Kids Health Community," a conversation with parents and educators to raise awareness about prescription drugs, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30 at the school on Oak Street in Steamboat Springs.

Presenters will include Mara Rhodes, Rx Task Force regional coordinator, Jonathan Judge, executive director of Rise Above Colorado, and Dr. Alexis Tracy, with Orthopaedics of Steamboat Springs. Other points of discussion will include safety tips for storing prescription medications and the benefits of therapy treatments for physical and emotional pain without pills.

During the day, Judge will speak with the school's fifth- to eighth-grade students about the dangers of prescription drugs.

Reading challenge program hits goal, earns $25K donation

Bud Werner Memorial Library's Winter Reading Challenge has already logged enough minutes and books nationally that Mark Cuban will donate $25,000 to the library's First Book program. Now, the library has its eye on an extra bonus challenge to become one of the top five libraries in total books and total minutes read relative to service area size. Those libraries will be put into a drawing to determine the winner of a $10,000 prize. The Steamboat library is hoping to exceed the winter reading goal of 200,018 total minutes read in January.

Steamboat Springs School District board slated to meet Monday

The Steamboat Springs School District board of education will hold a workshop and business meeting Monday, Jan. 29 at the District Office, 325 Seventh St.

The workshop is from 4:45 to 5:25 p.m. and will focus on governance process policy review and monitoring. The business meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. Reports and communications will include an update of the 2018-19 budget guidelines and parameters and an update on the advisory committees.

The Steamboat School District Board of Education meetings are available to watch live, and all meetings recorded within the last 12 months are also available to view on the district website.
