Duran to speak at Democratic fundraiser

— State Rep. Crisanta Duran, D-Denver, majority leader of the Colorado House of Representatives, will be the keynote speaker at the Routt County Democratic Party's annual Jefferson Jackson Potluck Dinner Fundraiser, set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center.

Duran, who represents District 5, was elected to the state house in 2010 and to the majority leadership in 2014. She is also a recent recipient of the Gabrielle Gifford’s 2016 Rising Star Award.

According to EmilysList.org, which chooses recipients, the award, named after former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, who was gravely wounded in a 2011 assassination attempt near Tuscon, "celebrates an extraordinary woman serving in state or local office."

Routt County Democratic Committee Chair Catherine Carson described Duran as "a sixth-generation Coloradan who has been a huge leader in economic development, the economy and jobs creation" and someone the committee is "very excited about having as a speaker."

Carson added that State Rep. Diane Mitsh Bush, Routt County commissioners Doug Monger and Tim Corrigan and Emily Tracy, Democratic candidate for Colorado Senate District 8, are also slated to speak at the event.

"It's just going to have great speakers, great energy, and we're really looking forward to it," Carson said of Saturday's event.

As in year's past, attendees are asked to bring a potluck dish, and suggested donations are $25 for adults, $15 for young Democrats (ages 20 to 30) and $10 for college students. Those 18 and younger are free.

Carson said the event will include a live auction — with such items as a Circle the Zirkel airplane ride and several pieces of artwork — a wine and beer bar and door prizes.

She added the Jefferson Jackson dinner is a zero-waste event and has been for the past 10 years. She also commended the work of the committee's volunteers, who, she said, organized the entire event.
