Driving range to open today

Christine Metz

The Haymaker Golf Course opens its driving range and short game area today, and the opening of the entire course is just a couple of weeks away.

The entire golf course is schedule to open May 1, but it could open earlier if weather continues to stay warm and dry, said City Director of Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Chris Wilson.

The course is wet from the winter snowmelt, Wilson said, and is too damp for any foot traffic or golf carts.

“We are sending someone to check on the greens daily,” Wilson said. “If the golf committee feels the facility is in appropriate shape, we may open early.”

The city traditionally tries to open the Haymaker Golf Course by May 1, but last year the city opened the course two weeks later because of heavy snowfall during the spring. It is rare to open the course earlier than May 1, Wilson said.

This week, the grounds crew has been aerating the greens to prepare for the season.

“It is still very, very wet. We don’t want to damage the course,” Wilson said. “(Opening earlier) really depends on how the weather treats us between now and May 1.”

Starting today, the driving green, chipping area and putting green are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Haymaker Pro Shop will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Golf Management Committee announced to the City Council that it would not increase any of the course’s rates from last year. For the past two years, the golf rates have seen a price increase.

Discounted early season passes are available until April 26. An early bird season adult resident pass remains $875, and an individual resident day pass for 18 holes is $41.

Season passes can be purchased at the Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Office at 245 Howelsen Parkway. To qualify for resident status, the purchaser must show one of three documents: a Colorado driver’s license with a Routt County address, a Routt County voter’s registration card or a Routt County notice of valuation.
