District 2: Kathi Meyer on the issues
October 11, 2005
City Council District II
Occupation: Retired Banker and Professional Financial Manager
Property Tax: Opposes proposed property tax. Supports asking voters for a property tax, but only if proposal includes tax relief to locals. Says city should re-examine overall tax structure and look for ways to more evenly diversify its income.
Growth: Opposes growth cap. Says limiting housing supply would drive the price of housing and put Steamboat further behind in affordable housing and hurt an already fragile economy. Believes other growth control mechanisms already exist in community plan.
Chamber Funding: As long as the city predominantly relies on sales tax, then some entity has to promote visitor spending here. Believes the chamber is the most efficient group to perform that role.
Triple Crown: City has a stake in maintaining summer tourism, including Triple Crown. Believes if Triple Crown was lost, even more marketing dollars would be needed to attract new groups or events. If new ball fields are built, they should be in less intrusive locations.
Mount Werner Water Consolidation: Supports any endeavor that could save the city substantial money through consolidating services. Hopes the water focus group will come up with a better plan than what was presented to voters during the last election.
