Decisions, Decisions: Choose your own adventure on a wild sports Saturday

— There are so many sporting events Saturday, no one can hit them all. Let us help decide what’s the best choice for you.

Do you want to watch sports or play sports?

Watch — go to No. 1

Play — go to No. 2

— 1. Watch

Your best event depends on your favorite brand of crazy. Does an Olympian flying off a ski jump appeal to you? Go to A. Are you more of an animal person? Try B. If it’s a taste of America’s pasttime you’re craving, look to C or D.

A. Ski Jumping Extravaganza

Nothing proves Steamboat’s love of skiing more than ski jumping and racing on the Fourth of July. A roller-ski race starts downtown at 9:15 a.m., before the parade. A ski jumping competition at nearby Howelsen Hill will hit its stride at 12:30 p.m.

B. Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo

Cowboys and cowgirls will be celebrating the holiday with a rodeo at the Romick Rodeo Arena in downtown. The 6:30 p.m. event costs $25, $15 for kids. It offers a perfect place to see the fireworks, but sells out, so get tickets early at http://www.SteamboatProRodeo.com.

C. Steamboat Storm baseball

Looking for a little free Independence Day baseball? Check out Steamboat’s summer college team, the Steamboat Storm, playing at noon Saturday against the Glenwood Geckos.

D. Mountain Magic softball tournament

Does softball count as the American pasttime, too? Let someone else decide, but check out the Mountain Magic adult slowpitch softball tournament, which will be raging all weekend at Howelsen Hill. It’s free to watch.

— 2. Play

There are TWO Steamboat Springs Running Series events on Saturday. Do you want to go slow (E) or fast (F)?

E. Mountain Madness half-marathon and 10K

The Mountain Madness half-marathon and 10-kilometer race starts at 7:30 a.m. Much of the river-adjacent run is flat, though there are rolling hills. Registration is available at http://www.RunningSeries.com starting at $20.

Here’s the story

F. Steamboat Sprint

The Steamboat Sprint is a 400-yard dash down Steamboat’s main drag. It starts at 9:40 a.m. and costs $5. There are winners, but it’s more of a fun event with a huge parade-ready crowd on hand.
