Commission sees few volunteers

City Planning Board receives only one applicant

Avi Salzman

— Although the number of candidates for City Council this year bespeaks a high level of civic involvement among local residents, the number of applicants for the Planning Commission may paint a different picture.

A month after City Clerk Julie Jordan-Struble put out advertisements for new planning commissioners, only one person has stepped up and returned an application.

Jordan-Struble said she is now extending the deadline to Sept. 14.

“One of the reasons we reopened this is we think we advertised for these vacancies during an inopportune time for the community.

“We have such an involved community, but during the end of summer so much is going on and people are trying to take advantage of the best of our community,” Jordan-Struble said.

The Planning Commission now has six members and is looking for two new commissioners.

After reducing the commission from nine to seven members earlier this year, the city needs one full commissioner and an alternate to replace two departing members whose terms would have been up March 31, 2003.

The City Council appoints commissioners after interviewing them.

Planning Commission Chair Kathi Meyer said she thinks the adoption of the Community Development Code makes it easier for a new applicant to sign on.

“I would hope now that the CD Code is done it would be a good time for a new person to come on,” Meyer said.

Meyer said she hopes the new commissioners can replace a departing architect and engineer in terms of the skills they bring to the table.

Meyer said with the advent of an Architectural Review Commission composed primarily of Planning Commissioners in the new code, an architect will prove especially valuable.
