Coaches, players continue look for answers after Sailors fall to Longhorns in Basalt
October 1, 2016
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School football team’s struggles continued Friday as the team fell to Basalt 49-0 on the road.
The Longhorns piled up 340 yards in total offense in the win, including three touchdowns from Jake Reardon and two more from Kyle Roberts. Basalt’s Alex Alberto and Ernesto Lopez also had touchdowns in the game.
“We just did not play well in any phase of the game tonight,” Sailors coach Lonn Clementson said. ‘“I think a slow start really affected us tonight, and then, it just got away from us.
The Longhorns rushed for 173 yards in the game, and senior quarterback Miles Levy threw for 167 more.
Clementson said he felt his team was prepared for the game, but acknowledged the Sailors did not play well. He added that, despite having several seniors on this year’s squad, the team is still very young, and many of the older players lack experience.
“We just don’t have a ton of experience — learning curve is really steep,” Clementson said. “We love our kids, and there is no question that they have a ton of potential. I think we played better in Conifer last week, but we just didn’t perform well as a group tonight. As a coach, that’s on me, and we will have to find a way to fix it.”
