Steamboat Springs — After six years of coaching the Chix with Stix women’s hockey team, coach Tim Shorland is starting to see his hard work pay off.
The Stix skills, and Shorland’s work, were on display Sunday at Howelsen Ice Arena when they took a pair of games from the Louisville/Broomfield Brewsers.
In the first game, the Stix downed the Brewsers, 6-2.
“I think we’re starting to see the fact that we’re a strong team this year,” Shorland said. “I think we’re really one of the stronger teams in this league.”
After falling behind 2-1 early, the Stix exploded for four goals in the second. Riley Polumbus added a third period goal and goalie Nikki Knoebel stopped 13 shots.
In the second game against the Brewsers, strong play carried the Stix to a 4-2 win. After dominating play for most of the first period, Lee Cox scored with a little more than four minutes to go on a cross-ice pass from Renee Dupre.

After the Brewsers tied the score at 1-1, Steamboat erupted again in the second and third periods, this time with two goals from Val Dietrich, and one from Cathy Wiedemer.
“We got some big goals,” Shorland said. “We we’re looking to score and we just got stronger as the game went on.”
While the Stix kept the puck in the Brewsers zone for most of the contest, Knoebel remained sharp in goal making 31 saves.
With the win the Stix moved to 5-3 overall.
