CenturyLink restores services after eight-hour-plus outage

Steamboat Springs — A severed fiber optic line caused telephone and Internet outages in Steamboat Springs, Oak Creek, Yampa, Fraser and Granby on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning.
According to CenturyLink media spokesperson Sara Spaulding, the fiber cut, discovered along Colorado Highway 9 approximately 5 miles south of Kremmling, was caused by a fencing contractor.
The fiber cut was fully repaired and all services were restored by 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, Spaulding said. The outage lasted lasted eight hours and 33 minutes.
According to Spaulding, this type of outage is referred to as a "toll-isolated" outage, which means callers can't make a call from land lines to outside area codes but can make calls within the same prefix. This outage impacted landlines, Internet services and cell phone providers.
Zirkel Wireless, a local Internet service provider in Steamboat Springs, experienced the outage Monday starting at 2:30 p.m. Monday until providers service was restored at 11:30 p.m. During that time, all external Internet access was disrupted.
"The problem is, there is only one route for connections out of Steamboat to Denver, and that's over Rabbits Ears down Highway 9, and during this construction that's going on, I suspect this will be a problem at other times in the future," said Sean Heskett, Zirkel Wireless owner and chief technical officer.

To prevent these outages, Heskett said Zirkel Wireless has been working with Mammoth Networks, a middle-mile provider that gives regional service providers a footprint outside of their traditional coverage areas, to get a connection out of Craig.
The outage also affected the Routt County Communications Center, and for about three hours Monday evening, 911 calls made to the city of Steamboat Springs’ 911 line were not being transferred, and anyone who called got a busy signal.
According to a news release from Sharon Clever, communications center supervisor, all 911 and administrative lines for Routt County Communications were back up and operational at 1:07 a.m. Tuesday.
