Carol Markowitz: Council needs to move on
September 5, 2017
The Steamboat Springs City Council's approval of the huge apartment building at Lincoln Avenue and 12th Street was wrong, and Judge Hill should be applauded for her denial of the project due to its numerous variances to the city building code.
The profitability of the project should not have been the basis of the council's decision, which ignored its own code on height, setbacks and density of the building.
Housing is needed, but a large apartment building is not appropriate downtown where the impact on traffic and parking would be extreme. The developer should reconsider the location of the building.
The council should not appeal Judge Hill's ruling. To do so would be a waste of taxpayers' dollars. The council's decision was wrong. Let's move on.
