— Officials at the Routt County Regional Building Department are promoting a series of free trainings for Yampa Valley construction professionals in preparation for the county's proposed move to updated building codes later this year.

Routt County Building Official Ben Grush is encouraging all local construction professionals to attend free training classes Tuesday and Wednesday that will explore the real world applications of the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code, which the county is moving toward adopting and implementing no later than Jan. 1, 2017.

Trainings take place from 8 a.m. to noon or 1 to 5 p.m. each day, with a focus on residential building Tuesday and on multi-family and commercial buildings Wednesday. The trainings take place in the auditorium at Colorado Mountain College.

Grush explained that the International Code Council publishes revised building codes every three years with the intent of incorporating new building technology, addressing emerging concerns with existing codes and deleting obsolete sections.

"The Routt County Regional Building Department is anxious to provide the best available building codes and code enforcement," Grush said. "Providing for the health, safety and welfare of residents and visitors to Routt County is consistent with the building department's mission statement."

Residential, commercial and multi-family buildings in Routt County currently are being constructed according to 2009 IECC building codes.

"Since it has been seven years since our last code adoption, I believe the time has come to move forward," Grush said. "Consideration was given to adopting the 2012 series, but research has shown that many of the changes from 2009 to 2012 have been reverted or deleted in the 2015 series."

Projects for which design work has begun or permits issued before the new adoption will be completed under the 2009 code, Grush said. The department is moving toward approval of the 2015 building standards via a staged review process this year. A comparison of the 2009 and 2015 International Residential Code has been sent to design professionals and contractors who routinely work on projects in the county. Each of the seven International Codes will be reviewed and comparisons sent out in the same fashion. Grush will accept public comment through Sept. 1 via email at bgrush@co.routt.co.us.

The Routt County Regional Building Department is helping coordinate a series of local free trainings to address key areas of change in the updated codes. The first training "Building Envelope Hands-On Workshop" is set for 3 to 5 p.m. March 23 in Library Hall at Bud Werner Memorial Library. Other workshops about ventilation systems and blower-door testing are in the works for September.
