Budget revisions on agenda for Steamboat Springs School Board

Teresa Ristow

— The Steamboat Springs School Board will meet Monday to discuss proposed budget changes, its electronic participation in meetings policy and other business.

The board meets at 5:30 p.m. at the district office board room, 325 Seventh St.

Annually, the board reviews proposed budget changes that come about after the Oct. 1 enrollment count is completed, according to Superintendent Brad Meeks.

This year's budget revisions include increased per-pupil student revenue of about $276,000 and increased costs, including $36,000 added to the telephone budget and $45,000 added to the legal budget.

Meeks said the increased phone costs are caused by additional technology equipment in the district and the increased need for connecting phones to the Internet.

Increased legal costs were added to the budget because of previous and upcoming items that may include a legal discussion, including the field house, the district's demographic study and a facility study.

"All of those things are going to have some type of legal expense, so we bumped up the legal side of the budget," Meeks said.

The cost of strategic planning and the district’s demographic study are also part of the budget revisions.

The district operates on an annual budget of about $31 million.

Also on Monday's agenda will be an action item for the approval of an updated policy regarding electronic participation in meetings.

Board members are allowed to participate in meetings via telephone or other electronic device when extenuating circumstances prevent them from attending in person.

Revisions to the policy include that the board member notify the board president and superintendent in writing, if possible, about meetings they wish to participate in electronically.

Board members can participate electronically in as many as two meetings per school calendar year.

The board also will discuss a recent Colorado Association of School Boards convention it attended and discuss next steps related to leadership training that the board participated in during two recent board workshops.
