Steamboat city crews to tackle median clean-up during week

Crews from the city of Steamboat Springs will be cleaning the landscaped medians along U.S. Highway 40 from downtown to JD Hays Way, as well as the Mount Werner Road medians and traffic circles. The spring-cleaning project will take place today to Friday, April 27, weather permitting. Work will begin after 8 a.m. and end by 4 p.m. to minimize the impacts during peak drive times. Left lanes may be closed in both directions, so expect possible delays.

School students can enjoy hot springs for free on spring break

Old Town Hot Springs is offering free admission to any grade-school student and younger today through Friday during the Steamboat Springs week of spring break.

In previous years, the pools were closed for cleaning during spring break; however, this year, the pools will be open for those remaining in town who need a fun and entertaining daytime activity.

Families can spend some relaxing downtime in the hot-springs-fed pools during the school break at a reduced cost. Any current high school senior or younger is eligible.

The water slides are closed for the off-season.

Public invited to participate in survey on future of downtown

The city of Steamboat Springs kicked off the first long-range vision plan for downtown since 1999 in mid-April with two community workshops and a public survey.

The survey, which is available through the city’s website, will close on May 11. It includes questions on topics including the following.

  • Downtown uses including retail, dining, entertainment, office and residential
  • Mobility and parking
  • Housing diversity including attainable opportunities for locals
  • Downtown character including building scale and design
  • Culture, the arts and historic preservation
  • The quality of the public environment including sidewalks, parks and public gathering spaces
  • Economics including the cost of doing business and development

While downtown is ultimately shaped by hundreds of individual, private decisions, the downtown plan provides the policy direction that will guide private as well as public investment and regulations.

Camp Invention to be offered in Steamboat Springs in June

Camp Invention, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment camp program, is coming to Strawberry Park Elementary the week of June 11 to 15.

A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in kindergarten through sixth grade to find their inner inventor by learning the process of innovation.

Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning; builds resourcefulness and problem-solving skills; and encourages entrepreneurship — in a fun and engaging environment.

This year’s Fast Forward curriculum features several video challenges from these Inductees encouraging children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness.

All local Camp Invention programs are facilitated and taught by certified educators who reside and teach in the community. Visit campinvention.org for more information.
