CDOT hosts free tire check in Steamboat on Saturday

As part of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Winter Wise campaign, the Colorado Department of Transportation and GCR Tires will host a courtesy tire check from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Safeway parking lot, 37500 E. U.S. Highway 40 in Steamboat Springs to inform drivers whether their tires and tread comply with Colorado’s traction law.

During inclement weather, CDOT will activate the traction law when road conditions become hazardous. When in effect, the traction law calls for all vehicles to have snow tires, mud/snow tires or a four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicle. All tires must have a minimum 1/8-inch tread. If weather conditions deteriorate further, CDOT will activate the chain law, which requires every vehicle to have chains or an alternative traction device. Failure to comply with these laws can result in fines ranging from $130 to $650.

“We want to remind Coloradans that winter driving conditions are hardly limited to winter — snow and ice often hit the mountains and roads well into spring,” said Stacia Sellers, CDOT Region 1 communications specialist, in a news release. “One of the best ways for drivers to help keep our roads safe is to ensure their cars are traveling on safe tires throughout the winter and spring. It is better to be prepared late in the season than not at all.”

At the tire check, GCR Tires technicians will be on site to discuss tire safety and inspect vehicles to determine if they meet the traction law requirements. After a quick check, technicians will provide motorists with a tire-check card that explains Colorado’s traction law requirements and informs them whether their tires comply.

Over the Hill Gang donates $4.4K to 3 local nonprofits

Steamboat Spring’s Over the Hill Gang, a social organization for active adults older than 50, earmarks a portion of its budget for contributions to local nonprofits. This year, OTHG awarded a total of $4,400 to three different organizations, Northwest Colorado Health, Routt County Council on Aging and the the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

Northwest Colorado Health received $800 to support their Aging Well programs for seniors, which engages seniors with wellness activities to reduce their risk of falls, injuries and illness and prevent social isolation. These services are available in Hayden, Steamboat Springs and South Routt County and are often offered in conjunction with senior meals.

Routt County Council on Aging was awarded $1,600 to support its Meals on Wheels program, which annually delivers more than 2,500 meals to homebound seniors in the county. Specifically, the funding was used to support the March for Meals Open House, a free lunch event open the community that includes entertainment, a presentation, decorations and door prizes and is aimed at raising awareness about the Meals on Wheels program.

The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club received $2,000 from OTHG. The funding is used to assist student athletes with entry fees and travel expenses for competitive events.

In addition to these three awards, the OTHG annually donates money to the Tread of Pioneers Museum, the Yampa River Botanic Park and Yampatika.

The Community Contributions Committee typically meets in January to decide where the excess funds in the treasury will be distributed based on members’ wishes as expressed on membership renewal forms.
