Election mailing may be in violation of state law

The owners of a Steamboat Springs company may have violated a state law by sending out a mailing stuffer supporting four City Council candidates.

Terry and Kathy Stokes, owners of PostNet, sent stuffers in a recent billing mailing that urge support for candidates Bud Romberg, Loui Antonucci, Nancy Kramer and Kevin Kaminski.

Under state law, corporations cannot do election communications, said Dan Foote, a city staff attorney.

City Clerk Julie Jordan said Friday that she called the Secretary of State’s Office to report the possible infraction. As required, Jordan said, she also called the Stokes.

Jordan said as far as she understood, the Stokes did not realize they possibly violated an election law.

The couple could not be reached for comment Friday.
