Motorist, passengers suspected of distribution
Three Steamboat Springs residents were arrested on suspicion of distributing marijuana after Colorado State Patrol troopers reportedly found several packages of marijuana in a car during a routine traffic stop Wednesday night.
State Patrol Trooper Brett Hilling said he pulled over a green Jeep Cherokee at 7:10 p.m. on U.S. Highway 40 near Dougherty Lane because the vehicle did not have a front license plate and had a cracked windshield.
As Hilling approached the Jeep, he said he noticed the “distinct odor of burning marijuana” and a clear plastic bag containing marijuana in the Jeep’s console.
The driver of the car, 19-year-old Chadwick Reynolds Sewell, and passengers Luke Austin Kessler, 20, and Amanda L. Cassavant, 20, were arrested on suspicion of felony distribution of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and being minors in possession.
Sewell also was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, Hilling said.

While searching the car, Hilling said he found a quart-sized Mason jar filled with five bags of packed marijuana weighing between 1.6 and 2.2 grams each. Hilling also found a bong made out of a Gatorade bottle, a 24-ounce can of Pabst Blue Ribbon, three packages of rolling papers, four additional bags of marijuana, marijuana smoking pipes and metal devices used for cleaning pipes.
Cassavant, Kessler and Sewell appeared in Routt County Court on Thursday for advisements.
A visiting judge from Moffat County gave Cassavant and Kessler $125 personal recognizance bonds. Sewell’s bond was set at $750.
All three are scheduled to appear in Routt County Court at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
