Boy, 15, eludes police in parents’ car

A 15-year-old boy reportedly took his parents Jaguar on a high-speed ride through downtown Steamboat Springs on Thursday night, evading police before abandoning the sedan in a parking lot.

Routt County Sheriff John Warner said the boy has not been charged, pending a review with the District Attorney’s Office. The gold-colored 1998 Jaguar was spotted going in excess of 80 mph heading into the residential area of downtown Steamboat, Warner said.

About 6:40 p.m. Thursday, the sheriff’s office received a call reporting that a father and son were in a physical altercation at 41975 Routt County Road 36. The caller then said the son drove off in his parents’ Jaguar.

A sheriff’s deputy spotted the car traveling near North Park Avenue and attempted to pull it over, Steamboat police Sgt. Nick Bosick said. The boy would not pull over for the deputy, who was following him with sirens on. When the deputy reached Soda Creek Elementary School, he turned the sirens off, Bosick said.

The deputy lost contact with the vehicle near the intersection of 13th Street and Lincoln Avenue. The Routt County Dispatch Center received calls from drivers reporting the Jaguar was traveling down U.S. Highway 40 at about 90 mph.

On U.S. 40 near Curve Court, a police office spotted the car driving past him, but the officer was traveling in the opposite direction and could not turn around in the heavy traffic to follow the car, Bosick said.

The police officer and sheriff’s deputy were not able to catch up with the car.

About midnight, Bosick found the car in the Curve Plaza parking lot, at the west end of town and next to the sheriff’s office. Police believe the boy fled on foot after parking the car, he said.

Friday morning, the boy’s parents brought him into the sheriff’s office. Charges he could face include speeding, careless driving, eluding and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
