Bob Dapper: Critical decision-making key for county

Bob Dapper/For Steamboat Today

If I could accomplish one thing in this short editorial opportunity, it would be to help you get to know me. I have lived in Routt County for 45 years, raised two children and just celebrated my 38th wedding anniversary.

It does not take all those years to realize what an amazing place we have to live, work, recreate and enjoy. It simply makes me understand how important it is that we want to preserve this beauty.

It takes hard work to manage this incredible asset, for which I want to be a steward while at the same time knowing how important the environmental and economic growth is a key to its survival.

When I started down this road seeking to become a commissioner, I had no political background, only the business skills and common sense to know I sincerely want the job. My style is simple and fair.

I will be the person who listens to both sides of a discussion to help bring consensus to decision making that is in the best interest of Routt County citizens and not political allies. Additionally, I want to hold myself and others around me accountable through the process.

Goals, action plans, fiscal awareness and accountability are keys to good leadership and critical decision making necessary for a commissioner — attributes I have relied on throughout my business and civic life.

While I know everyone does not and will not agree on the solutions to all issues, I believe improved communication from the commissioners to the citizens will help all of us to better understand the "ins and outs" of the decision-making process and the end result.

Having transparency to the public with an open and welcome atmosphere for everyone is critical. Another of my priorities is to be a very accessible commissioner helping to build trust and confidence.

I am determined, if elected, not to come to this position with a personal agenda, bias or ideology of options concerning decisions for popular issues. The responsibility of a commissioner representing all citizens of Routt County is to weigh all the facts and information which lead to thoughtful and practical decisions in the best interest of all concerned.

We are one party working together, not two teams trying to notch a win for our side.

I believe my style, my energy and my enthusiasm will help re-energize the commissioners' offices. I have spent time getting to know Commissioners Monger and Hermasinski and consider it a privilege and thrill to work with them in the immediate future.

In closing, I will say this is the longest job interview of my life. But one I have thoroughly enjoyed, traveling throughout the county seeing long-time acquaintances, meeting many new friends and greatly expanding my knowledge through direct input from the people of Routt County.

This race for me is not about winning the election for the sake of winning, but for me to have the opportunity to help preserve the love of our Valley for our generation while also creating sustainability for our future generations.

Republican Bob Dapper is running for Routt County commissioner, District 1.
