Arianthé C. Stettner: The rest of the story

I enjoyed reading the “Robbery in Drag” story about Chick Yock’s heist attempt. Yet, I’m sure that many of your readers may not know the most recent history of the Yock Cabin.

Indeed, there were plans to remove the collapsed cabin from the property, but in 2010, thanks to the efforts of Historic Routt County, the cabin was rebuilt. Working closely with the city of Steamboat Springs, Historic Routt County raised the funds for the project and hired a team of local young people from Rocky Mountain Youth Corps to train with a local contractor and reconstruct the log cabin while they learned about Routt County history, homesteading and the Yock family.

It was a great partnership. Look for the interpretive sign about the Steamboat Barn and Yock Cabin to be installed at the site in the months ahead, thanks to Northwest Colorado Cultural Heritage Program and Routt County's Museum and Heritage Fund.

Historic Routt County has facilitated the preservation of many local historic landmarks over the past 20 years. It is currently the project manager for Crossan’s Market in Yampa, and the fiscal agent for Save Arnold Barn.

Now that the days are getting longer, I invite you to take a drive and experience some of these historic sites. Visit the Diamond Window Cabin on the road to Stagecoach Reservoir, Mesa Schoolhouse at the base of Rabbit Ears Pass, and after the snow melts, the Hahn’s Peak Fire Lookout. To learn more, visit Historic Routt County’s website at historicrouttcounty.org or call 970-875-1305.

Have fun exploring!
