6 people arrested on DUI charges on New Year’s Eve in Routt County after police step up patrols

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Six people in Routt County spent the first hours of 2018 behind bars after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, including one man who lost control of his vehicle Sunday night on Routt County Road 179 and crashed into a tree south of Milner.

Colorado State Patrol Sergeant Scott Elliott said the man was taken to the hospital for evaluation, but he was uninjured.

Steamboat Springs police arrested two people on suspicion of DUI after the clock struck midnight, while state troopers pulled over and arrested three people suspected of driving under the influence early Monday morning.

Police also arrested a woman who was suspected of leaving the scene of an accident while driving under the influence.

The DUI arrests came as local police stepped up enforcement of impaired driving for the busy New Year’s holiday.

They also came on a night when the city's free bus service ran additional buses to get more people home safely.

Elliott said he had two troopers working overtime shifts dedicated to monitoring the roads for impaired drivers.

Outside of the DUI arrests, Officer John McCartin said the holiday was relatively quiet.

"The two busiest days for us are New Year’s Eve and Fourth of July," he said. "It seemed pretty calm and quiet for a New Year’s Eve."

Some of the calls police did have to respond to included an individual who punched and broke a window on a Steamboat Springs Transit bus, and a fight that broke out on another bus early Monday morning, which resulted in an unruly passenger having to be removed at Third Street and Lincoln Avenue.

Around 6 a.m., police responded to a fight between two roommates that sent one of the roommates to the hospital with injuries.
