STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Sometimes getting away from the crowds is the answer you were looking for all along.

Life slows down. You take time to breathe in the crisp alpine air, listen to the meandering stream or the distant bird song. Something about it washes your troubles away.

The intoxicatingly beautiful forests and scenic wonders of Routt County on foot await.

Not sure where to start?

Venture outside the usual afternoon hike and explore somewhere new this weekend with these six day hikes in mind.

Coulton Creek (#1188)

With vistas of the Elk River Valley and plenty of wildflowers, lush meadows and meandering streams, this trail starts off with a bit of elevation gain then levels off. Pack a lunch and stop at the overlook perfect for a snack, rest or lunch.

Soda Creek

Starting at the Dry Lake Campground this is a moderately easy hike as a counterclockwise loop into the Soda Creek Valley. Follow the old National Forest System Road 319 to the trail that become singletrack and splits off right for some spectacular views. It’s about 3 miles roundtrip.

Mosquito Lake (#1120)

Another moderate hike (#1120) with an elevation of 10,000, it’s a different route than the popular Devil’s Causeway, where you will start. The trail splits off after a mile or so. It’s a higher elevation hike, but totally worth it for the views and wildflowers. Don’t forget to start early to beat the afternoon storms.

Hinman Creek Trail (#1170)

Looking for something a little longer? This is about a 6-mile, lightly-trafficked out-and-back trail near Clark. It offers solitude and a moderate hike amid an incredible aspen grove.

Three Island Lake (#1163)

A favorite hike, this trail starts off with great views and a bit of a climb that will follow the south fork of the Elk River and you’ll see Dome Peak in the distance. It’s a alpine lake with plenty of shade and chilly water. Make it a backpacking adventure and loop in the Wyoming Trail (#1101).

Rabbit Ears

Named after the rock formation at the top of the trail, this classic hike is about 5 miles featuring great wildflowers and vistas. It starts near Dumont Lake with a variety of other trails nearby.
