2016 Winter Carnival button art contest underway

Buttons from Winter Carnivals from past years on display at the Tread of Pioneers museum in 2013. Submissions for the 2016 Winter Carnival button are due by 5 p.m. Monday.

— Young artists have until 5 p.m. Monday to turn in submissions for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's Winter Carnival button contest.

For the first time this year, the contest will include an online voting component where anyone in the community will be able to vote on the submissions Dec. 1 through the morning of Dec. 14.

Voting will determine three of the contest finalists, while three others will be selected by a jury, with the SSWSC deciding the winning button art from that final six.

As of Friday, the club already had received 70 submissions from children in grade 12 and younger, according to Rory Clow, marketing and public relations director for SSWSC.

"We're hoping to get as many as we can," Clow said. "It's always fun to see what the kids come up with."

Clow said she was a button winner in high school and said the criteria for who can enter the contest has varied through the years, leading to a wide variety of button designs ranging from student work to professional artist submissions.

She said focusing on children for the contest provides a good opportunity to involve students in the Winter Carnival, even if they aren't participating in any snow activities.

The theme for this year's Winter Carnival and the button contest is "Warmth of Winter." "I think the unique, creative entries and entries that have bright colors that pop seem to be popular," Clow said.

The button artwork winner will be selected and notified by Dec. 18, and the winning design will be used on 2016 Winter Carnival banners, posters, digital and print publications and on the event website in addition to being printed on 8,000 buttons used for entry to Winter Carnival events.

The 2016 Winter Carnival takes place Feb. 3 through 7.

Clow also said the top three finalists will be recognized during the Winter Carnival by coming onto the event stage and receiving small prizes.
