Women’s ski jumping takes flight

Luke Graham

— Germany’s Carina Vogt made history Tuesday night at the RusSki Gorki Jumping Center, becoming the first woman to win a medal in ski jumping.

Austria’s Daniela Iraschko-Stolz won silver, while France’s Coline Mattel won bronze.

“I don’t quite understand how this has happened,” Vogt said. “It was just amazing. I haven’t been in first place much, and it’s a surprise that I won.”

Jessica Jerome was the top American in 10th, while Lindsey Van was 15th and Sarah Hendrickson was 21st.

Hendrickson was the defending world champion but blew out her knee five months ago.

Not having competed on the World Cup circuit this season, Hendrickson was given bib No. 1 on Tuesday night, signifying she was the first woman in Olympic history to ski jump.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be the first one to jump in the first women’s ski jumping competition at the Olympics,” she said. “My performance was not the best, but I kind of expected it.”
